The conference was open to students from all majors and was focused on a broad range of topics related to elective courses, including:

    • Best practices in designing and delivering elective courses
    • Strategies for integrating ISS Elective Courses into academic programs
    • Designing and developing ISS Elective Courses that enhance student learning
    • Assessing the Effectiveness of ISS Elective Courses
    • The Role of ISS Elective Courses in fostering critical thinking and creativity
    • Aligning ISS Elective Courses with career goals and industry needs
    • Technology-enabled innovations in elective course delivery
    • Encouraging diversity and inclusivity in elective course offerings

The conference provided ISS students with the opportunity to network with professionals in their fields and explore potential career paths. Students have a wide range of opportunities to interact with speakers and presenters, including Q&A sessions and roundtable discussions. Elective courses provide ECTS credits toward an educational process at International Swiss School courses but are not a mandatory part of the program. Instead, ISS students can select them based on their interests and their connection with their career goals. For example, students could choose electives to increase their knowledge of a particular field or allow them to focus on a career they’re considering. The ISS students even can choose electives based on how challenging they are, as taking more difficult courses helps them impress admissions counselors and future employers.

One of the most important considerations in choosing the best elective courses is deciding which classes interest students the most. Electives are classes at the International Swiss School that are not a mandatory part of an educational program. They provide ISS students with an opportunity to pursue their interests. For example, students want to try a drawing or painting class if they are a math major or take a business class if they are an art major. Electives can provide students with additional skills they can use while in school and after they graduate, and help them obtain a well-rounded education.

  • Aim of Elective Courses

Elective courses at International Swiss School aim to provide students with an opportunity to pursue their interests, enhance their skills, and broaden their academic horizons beyond their major or core curriculum requirements. Elective courses at the International Swiss School allow students to explore topics in greater depth and choose from a variety of different courses in different disciplines.

Some common goals of elective courses at the International Swiss School include:

    • To allow students to explore areas of personal interest that cannot be covered in their major or core curriculum.
    • To provide ISS students with an opportunity to develop new skills or expertise in a particular subject area.
    • To broaden ISS students’ knowledge and understanding of different disciplines and perspectives.
    • To encourage ISS students to engage in interdisciplinary thinking and problem-solving.
    • To help students develop critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills that are applicable across different fields.

Elective courses aim to help ISS students become more well-rounded and intellectually curious individuals and to prepare them for lifelong learning and success in their careers and personal lives.

  • Advantages of Elective Courses

Improve Students’ GPAs. An elective course (ideally) should be less strenuous than ISS students’ core courses. Grading can be on a different scale from your required courses, and if the workload and/or criteria are less intense, students can earn a grade that improves their overall grade point average (GPA). Students can start planning their studies around these electives by having an idea of which ones they want to take. If students’ primary program is intensive and does not give them much space for difficult electives, they can choose comparatively easier electives that have less coursework and simpler assignments.

Develop New Skills. Electives can be used to broaden skill sets — and some skills may even support the activities in the ISS degree program. For example, if students major in economics, choosing psychology as an elective can help them understand the mindset of buyers and sellers and understand the reasons for their spending patterns.

Explore New Fields of Study. Electives give students space to find their niche by showcasing their talents and developing new interests and abilities. They provide an opportunity to explore an area of interest or discover completely new areas students haven`t considered before.

Diversify Your Professional Portfolio. Employers look for more than just good grades and a degree. They look for skills like creativity, drive, passion, self-esteem, organization, and more, all of which come with diverse experiences inside the classroom and out. Electives help students discover and build their skills, whether they are career-specific or general.

Networking. Elective courses at International Swiss School bring together students from different disciplines and backgrounds, providing opportunities for networking and collaboration. These courses can help students build professional relationships and expand their social networks.

Career preparation. Elective courses at International Swiss School can help students prepare for future careers by providing practical skills and knowledge relevant to their chosen field. For example, a marketing student can take a social media marketing course to gain practical skills that are in high demand in the job market.
